Best over Biggest: Lessons from my journey in Entrepreneurship
Mon, May 6, 2024 | 8:47 am

In my role as the leader of a growing enterprise, I have often paused to reflect on what has brought me here. My journey is defined not by a quest for size but by a commitment to being the best. In a business world that frequently equates success with scale and financial metrics, I have always believed that true prosperity is achieved through excellence, not sheer volume. Today I’m inspired and encouraged to pass on some lessons that I’ve had time to reflect on over the years.

Understanding True Success

“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” – Booker T. Washington.

From my early days as an entrepreneur, I understood that the road to success is paved with challenges. Each obstacle I faced was an opportunity to learn and grow stronger. This perspective has been vital, as it requires a commitment to personal development and resilience, key traits for any business leader. True success comes from overcoming unforeseen challenges, not merely accumulating accolades or wealth.

The Core of Entrepreneurship

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs

Passion is the heart of my entrepreneurial spirit. It is easy to get swept up in the race to be the biggest, to dominate the market. However, if the pursuit of size overrides the passion for the work itself, then the essence of entrepreneurship is lost. I have always prioritized my passion for the business, ensuring that every step we take is infused with love and dedication to excellence.

Balancing Profitability with Quality

As a capital allocator, I acknowledge the importance of profitability. A business must be financially healthy to sustain itself. However, this financial focus should never compromise the quality of what we offer. Quality and profitability are not mutually exclusive; they are complementary pillars that support sustainable business growth.

“Quality is not an act, it is a habit.” – Aristotle

If you truly believe yourself to be in the world of business, every service we provide and product we create, we aim for the highest quality. This commitment I believe, has set my enterprises apart in a crowded market and allowed us to build a loyal customer base that loves what we offer and most importantly values what we do.

Exceeding Expectations

In business, merely meeting expectations is not enough. To truly stand out, one must exceed them—continually setting higher standards and delivering beyond what is anticipated. This drive for excellence ensures not only customer satisfaction but also inspires teams to push the boundaries of what is possible.

For the Budding Entrepreneurs

It’s a treacherous road that only a few will walk in, and those who do, define the world we live in, create innovations to serve humankind, and attract the investment and capital inflows that are essential for the growth of our economies. To those who are paving the way, I encourage you to:

  1. Stay True to Your Values: Success is more than just following trends or outmaneuvering competitors. It’s about adhering to your core values and letting them guide every decision and strategy. Values are the most powerful currencies of exchange in the modern world.
  2. Embrace Adaptability and Excellence: The entrepreneurial landscape is ever-changing. Adaptability is crucial, but when paired with an unwavering commitment to excellence, it creates a robust foundation for success. Never stop growing.
  3. Find Happiness in Your Work: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” – Albert Schweitzer. Enjoying what you do is crucial. It fuels your daily efforts and aligns your career with your happiness, leading to profound and lasting success.

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded that the ultimate measure of success is not how big your company becomes but how well you do what you do. For those embarking on their entrepreneurial journeys, let this be a guiding light: prioritize excellence over expansion, passion oversize, and quality over quantity. Thrive by being the best, and let success follow naturally.
